Homemade Meat Sauce with beef.

Updated: Feb 15, 2019

Here is another simple recipe that my grandmother used to make for me and my step-grandfather when she cooked spaghetti as that was the only pasta he liked for some reason. Later on, I tried this recipe with linguine and rigatoni and have enjoyed them both. I have seen versions of this recipe online with ingredients such as Italian sausage or wine added but have not tried doing this yet but in future blogs will do so and let you know how it turns out.

4 Tbl Olive Oil

1 medium yellow onion

2 gloves garlic

1/8 cup dried parsley

1 lb ground beef

28 oz can of tomatoes peeled

1 can of tomato paste

1 tsp basil

1 bay leaf

Graded rind of 1/2 lemon

1 Tsp Kosher Salt

1/2 tsp freshly ground pepper

1:Heat the olive oil in a heavy saucepan. Next mince your onion, garlic and parsley and add them to the oil to cook in a medium heat until the onion turns golden brown.

2: Next add the meat and cook for 5 minutes until the meat is barely brown on the outside and red in the middle. Stir with a wooden spoon to avoid lumping.

3: Add the remaining ingredients and turn down the heat to its lowest point. Cover the pan and let the sauce simmer for a minimum of 1 hour while stirring occasionally. Just remember that the longer you let its simmer, the longer it allows the ingredients to blend together and the thicker the sauce will become. So if you want to let it cook longer so problem. Its a good thing.

4: When you are ready to serve, remove the Bay Leaf and add additional salt or pepper to taste if necessary. Serve with pasta and sprinkle with cheese.

This is also one of those recipes that is a favorite of my son's to make as he loves putting all the different ingredients together and the smell of the sauce as it slowly cooks in the pan, I have made versions of this meat sauce recipes with mushrooms but did not have any on this occasion. In future blogs I will be adding mushrooms to this recipe and will experiment with a by mixing in a few different types of wines and let you know how that turns out., In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this sauce and thank you for visiting my blog.
